Children Breeding In Islam
Children are the adornment of the life of this world and one of the boons of Allah almighty that none knows its value except who had been prevented from it. They are trusts we will be asked by Allah whether we have kept them or lost them. The prophet peace be upon him said: “Allah would ask every trustee about his trust, did he keep or lose it?” [Narrated by Al-Albani]
Keeping the children as trust would be by taking care of them and breeding them according to the approach of Allah almighty; this could be achieved by doing the following:
1- Planting the right creed in their hearts; we should take the commandment of Luqman to his son as a good example for this; Allah almighty says: “And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice."” [Luqman 31:13]
{وَإِذْ قَالَ لُقْمَانُ لِابْنِهِ وَهُوَ يَعِظُهُ يَا بُنَيَّ لَا تُشْرِكْ بِاللَّـهِ ۖ إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ}
Transliteration: Waith qala luqmanu liibnihi wahuwa yaAAithuhu ya bunayya la tushrik biAllahi inna alshshirka lathulmun AAatheemun
Our messenger, peace be upon him, advised his cousin by this; he said: “O son, I will teach you some words; mention Allah and He would mention you, mention Allah and you would find Him in your way. If you wanted to ask, you would ask Allah…” [to the end of the famous Hadeeth that is narrated by At-Tirmizy]
2- You should order, stimulate, intimidate and train them to perform the duties of the religion (e.g. prayer, fast, Hajj, charity…etc.) As for the prayer, the prophet peace be upon him gave us the following commandment: “Order your children to perform prayers, when they are seven years old and beat them for (not performing) it when they are ten years old, and separate between them in the beds” [narrated by Abu Dawud]
As for the fast; the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) used to train their children to fast. Ar-Rabee bint Moawez said: “The prophet peace be upon him sent on the morning of Ashoura day to the villages of Al-Ansar; ‘Who had not fast this day, should complete the rest of his day, and who had fasted this day should fast.’”
She said: “Because of that, we used later to fast it (Ashoura day), and make our children fast it, and make for them toys of wool. And when one of them cries out of hunger, we would give him the toys till the time of breakfast” [Narrated by Al-Bukhari]
3- Planting the Islamic manners (e.g. truthfulness, honesty, generosity, courage, modest, respect to the elder…etc,) in them, and warning them from the bad manners (e.g. arrogance, selfishness…etc.)
4- Teaching them the etiquettes; the prophet peace be upon him said to Omar bin Abi Salama: “O son, begin in the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you” [Agreed upon]
The righteous ancestors followed this way, so they brought generations raised the rank of the Ummah.
Finally, parents’ invoke is acceptable; Allah almighty has told us that His slaves invoke Him saying: “Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.” [Al-Furqan: 74]
{ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا}
